Blade: Hand forged W2 carbon steel with a clay zone heat treatment
Bolster: Integral W2 carbon steel
Handle: Ancient bog oak
Sheath: Cross draw leather sheath by Dave Smith
Description: Journeyman Smith Shawn Ellis lives in the Ozarks -- an area well known for hunting and fishing. After searching for a knife that would perform well -- holding a keen, long lasting edge -- Sean realized that he had to learn how to forge and create his own knives. Shawn even competed in and won the Forged in Fire competition as seen on the History Channel.
Ellis began this integral hunter by hand forging the blade, bolster, and tang from a single piece of W2 carbon steel, showing Shawn's skill at the forge. A traditional Japanese clay zone heat treatment results in a dramatic heat treatment line called a hamon. This undulating line marks the transition between the soft, supportive spine and the keen, long lasting edge. The spine and choil have been rounded for a comfortable grip.
The handle is formed from ancient bog oak wood. This wood has been buried in a peat bog for hundreds or sometimes thousands of years. The extremely low oxygen conditions of the bog protect the wood from normal decay, while the underlying peat provides acidic conditions where iron salts and other minerals react with the tannins in the wood, gradually giving it a distinct dark brown to almost black color. The distal tapered blade ensures exceptional balance in hand.
Accompanied by a hand sewn cross draw leather sheath to keep the knife close at hand.
Excellent work throughout!
