Description: Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans. Regretfully, Daniel makes very few hand forged knives today, with most of his efforts devoted to the Winkler Knives line.
This Piggyback Damascus Hunter Set was made around 2010. It is in new condition and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, Daniel could have made it yesterday. Even when this set was made, Daniel and Karen rarely created Piggyback sets and they are in extreme demand. This set consists of two knives - a camp knife and a skinning/caping knife. The damascus blades were forged to shape from carbon steels. In the early American frontier, knives frequently began their lives as files. When the teeth dulled, they could be ground into a new tool. Daniel finished the flats of these blades to resemble file knives. The spines are polished and etched to reveal the underlying damascus pattern.
The handles are formed from carved bone. The larger camp knife handle is made from elk bone. The caping knife is made from deer bone. The ends of both handles have been roughly finished, lending to an aged, natural appearance. The handles are wrapped with raw hide and completed with leather thongs.
The camp knife features an 8-1/4 inch blade with an overall length of 13-1/4 inches. The distal tapered blade measures .3" thick at the bolster, .24" at the middle, and .06 approximately 1/2" before the tip. The caping knife features a 3 inch blade with an overall length of 6-1/2 inches. The blade tapers from .21", to .17" at the middle, and .06" near the tip.
The knives are accompanied by a piggyback style sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style sheath is formed from roughened leather and rawhide. Antique beads, a bone feather, and leather thongs decorate the sheath.
Truly an extraordinary work of art!
