Description: Mastersmith Kevin Harvey is well known for his tremendous attention to detail -- only matched by his skill at design. Kevin is well known for his historic inspired bowie knives. The "dog bone" bowie style was popular in the 1830's, with many produced by Sheffield cutlers and imported to America. It is easily recognized by its distinctive pommel which gives the knife its name. The Dog Bone frame provides a very secure hold in the hand. Regretfully, few of Mastersmith Harvey's knives make it to the US these days and I was extremely excited when this one arrived at our gallery.
The 8-3/4 inch clip point blade was forged to shape by Kevin from carbon steels. The complex pattern is one he calls Transition. It features s bold flash down the center of the convex ground blade. The complex pattern is immediately captivating and demands further examination. The sharpened clip moves into an unsharpened swedge along the spine.
The handle combines carved African blackwood with nickel silver fittings, fileworked nickel silver liners, and Ws pattern damascus ferrule. The left scale features a nickel silver escutcheon.
This knife is accompanied by custom leather sheath by Kevin. Genuine black ostrich leather is wrapped over cowhide. The sheath is completed with a nickel silver throat and tip.
The knife is set in a custom built presentation box by Brian Coetzee from White River, South Africa. The box is formed from Kiaat wood (Pterocarpus angolensis) with a Jacaranda (Jacaranda mimosifolia) lid. Panga Panga (Millettia stuhlmannii) and Jacaranda inlays add a nice contrast.
Absolutely exceptional work throughout!
