Description: Explorer George Washington Sears, who was born in 1821, lived with Nipmuc Indians and learned skills of wilderness living. He is best known for his writings under the pen name of "Nessmuk", which dated from 1880 - 1890. During this time, he developed the knife pattern which would later bear his name. This pattern is believed by many woodsman to be the perfect knife, even today. The deep belly allows it to be an excellent skinning knife, with the weight brought toward the tip.
Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans.
Knives by Daniel Winkler have an authenticity rarely found in other makers' work. Sadly, Daniel and Karen are currently not making their hand forged knives. This one was made back in December 2008. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Daniel and Karen could have made it yesterday.
The blade was hand forged by Winkler using 1084 carbon steel and has an antiqued finish. The flats are forge finished. The spine is hand fileworked for a secure thumb purchase.
The handle is made from naturally shed elk antler set on a distal tapered full tang with antiqued mild steel pins. The handle is very comfortable and the natural texture provides a sure grip.
The knife is accompanied by a frontier style rawhide sheath by Karen Shook. A sewn seam travels around the edge. A natural porcupine quill medicine wheel is displayed on the front of the sheath. Thongs are decorated with antique trade beads, tin cones and horse hair.
Excellent work throughout!
