Description: Visiting Neels van den Berg's workshop on a recent trip to South Africa with a real treat. His forge is pretty much in the middle of no where or at least if you kept driving down the road, that is clearly where it would end. The twisting road travels through veldt populated by zebra. Neels is well known for his war hammers and his spike hawks. In fact, he teaches classes in forging these complex pieces!
The head measures 8.7 inches from the tip of the spike to the cutting face. A differential heat treatment ensures a keen, long lasting edge combined with strength and durability.
The hand contoured haft is formed from South African chakate preto wood (Guibourtia conjugata). Considered a precious wood in Africa, the dark brown wood is moderately lustrous with an interlocked grain and fine texture. This type of wood has been compared to African blackwood, but it is not quite as heavy. It is a great choice for a strong, durable haft.
The hawk is accompanied by a hand stitched, tooled leather sheath.
Nice work throughout!
