Description: Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans.
Over the last several years, Mastersmith Daniel Winkler has focused his attention on his Winkler II line of knives. This is a hand forged knife by Mastersmith Daniel Winkler. It is new from Winkler and is one of only five knives that he forged in 2016. It is among the last handful of knives that he has hand forged to date.
The 320 layer damascus blade was hand forged by Winkler using 1084 and SA203E carbon steels and has an antiqued finish. Like many knives of the American frontier, the flats feature a rasp texture. Frequently, early American knives were re-purposed, worn out files and rasps turned into knives. Here, Daniel has forged a rasp texture into the steel. The spine is hand fileworked for a secure thumb grip and is stamped with Winkler's makers mark and the year the knife was completed.
The handle is made from ancient walrus ivory scales set against hand forged damascus bolsters. The handle is very comfortable and the natural texture provides a sure grip. The knife is very well balanced due to the distal tapered spine and tang.
To keep the knife close at hand, a frontier style rawhide sheath with tin cone, horse hair, antique trade beads, bone and porcupine quill decoration is included. The box the knife comes in has been hand signed by Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook. A limited edition Winkler II Zippo lighter is included as an extra.
Excellent work throughout!
