Description: Mastersmith Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Andrew has a design sense that is beyond compare. Andrew won the Makers' Choice and Best of Show at the 2015 BladeGallery International Knife Show. He is clearly a maker to be reckoned with! This knife was kept in a private collection since it was made and by all appearances it is in brand new unused condition and Andrew could have made it yesterday!
A unique knife at very first sight, the handle is made from forged and textured mild steel. The pivot is created from Andrew's own mokume gane, forged from fine silver and copper. 24k gold pollen inlays are at the center of each floral pivot. Both scales feature honey bees, flying toward a flower to collect pollen. The bees are inlaid into the mild steel background in sterling silver. They are overlaid with 24 kt gold details. Flower stems are inlaid with 24k gold and hold flower formed from mokume gane (forged from fine silver and copper). The steel scales are set on 308 stainless steel liners, which in turn surround the textured and fileworked backbar. The backbar is set with 2.00mm faceted rubies.
The blade shows off tremendous skill at the forge. Andrew combined 1084 and L6 carbon steels into a beautiful ladder pattern. The blade is easily opened using the right handed thumb stud (created from forge welded cable). Andrew's mark is set on the left ricasso -- also in 24k gold.
The knife is accompanied by a display stand forged from antique wrought iron. The knife is securely held in the stand with a magnet.
This is an amazing work of art and tremendously inspiring! Words cannot do this knife justice. It is clear why Andrew Meers has quickly become among my favorite makers -- and is winning so many accolades!
