Description: This custom Koa Fighter was created by Mike Shindel of Blade and Hammer Custom Knives. Mike believes strongly in hand forging and sole authorship. Everything is done in house, from forging, grinding and heat treating the blade, to making the sheath. Shindel has an excellent sense of design and an exceptional fit and finish. This knife won Best Fighter at the 2016 California Knife Makers Association Show! The award plaque from the show is included with the knife.
The full flat ground, 7-1/2" blade was forged to shape from 1075 carbon steels. Mike used a Japanese technique to create a differential heat treatment. The spine was coated in clay prior to quenching. This creates a soft, supportive spine, with a keen, long lasting edge. The dramatic differential heat treatment line is called a hamon.
The handle features presentation grade curly koa wood. The S-guard and butt cap are forged from wrought iron recovered from a 200 year old wagon wheel. The knife includes a hand stitched leather sheath made from full grain cowhide leather.
Excellent work throughout!
