Description: Pär-Olof Eklund is a master of the Sami styled knife and regularly receives awards in the Swedish Championships. Seeing his work, it is no surprise. This large tanto is truly a one-of-a-kind piece. Eklund describes this as one of his most challenging knives to date.
The complex blade was forged by renowned Swedish bladesmith Mattias Styrefors. Mattias used a technique borrowed from Japan called san mai (three layers). The outer mosaic damascus layers surround an explosion pattern center core (forged from 20C and 15N20 carbon steels. The resulting blade is spectacularly dramatic and shows off Styrefors' work at its best.
The Sami style handle has a slim oval shape that fits very comfortably into the hand. The reindeer antler has a gloss polish, bringing out natural variations in color. The traditional Scandinavian patterns are not scrimshaw, but hand engraving, darkened with alder bark powder. The engraving is very detailed, showing tremendous skill in implementation. Spacers are formed from stabilized birch wood and honeycomb damascus forged by Vladic Daniluc. Vladic is a Russian-born bladesmith now living in Sweden. He is well known throughout Europe for his exquisite control over damascus as well as his dramatic hunting knives.
The exquisite knife is accompanied by birch wood and reindeer antler presentation stand. The reindeer antler is engraved to match the handle.
This knife is sure to be at the center of any collection!
