Description: Charlie Ellis first struck hot steel in 2005, and has since traveled from Maine to North Carolina in pursuit of the perfect blade. In 2007 he enrolled in the Hand Wrought Metals program at Haywood College in Clyde, North Carolina. There he learned a great deal from David Burnette, Mastersmith Jason Knight, as well as a host of others through the school's partnership with the American Bladesmith Society. Since 2014, he has been a full time blacksmith living in the mountains of western North Carolina with his wife and son.
Higonokami are the classic folding pocket knives native to Japan. This traditional knife is a friction folder, using the friction of the swivel and the pressure of the user's thumb on a protruding tang to prevent the knife from folding during use.
The elegant blade was hand forged in a technique known as san mai (three layers). Layers of 410 stainless steel surround a 1095 carbon steel core. The result is the exceptional edge holding of carbon steel with significantly easier care. Because this knife is made from carbon steel, we recommend using camellia oil to avoid rust. By forging closely to shape, Ellis ensures optimal grain structure for a keen, long lasting edge.
The handle is made from 4130 chrome alloy steel with an antiqued, blackened finish. 4130 steel sheet is considerably stronger and harder than other standard steel grades and is commonly used in construction of commercial and military aircraft. An integral deep carry pocket clip to keep the knife close at hand.
An exceptionally creative piece that you are sure to enjoy!
