Description: This knife is a collaboration between Mastersmith Haley DesRosiers and her apprentice Vanessa Johnston. It shows the tremendous skills -- both in design and implementation that both of these bladesmiths share. Haley forged the damascus blade to shape, ground it and heat treated it. Vanessa did the rest. I can't say enough good things about both of these makers.
Hayley lives and works along side her husband Mastersmith Adam DesRosiers. They live off the grid in very remote rural Alaska. With no running water or power available for 8 miles, aside from the sky, creek, or gas generator, Hayley truly lives off of the land and creates hand made pieces meant for serious use and collection! I have watched Haley's work over many years and have always been inspired by her attention to detail and devotion to the forge.
Vanessa Johnston is a family friend of Haley's. She grew up in eastern Washington and now lives in Petersburg, Alaska. Her sense of design and skill of implementation are truly spectacular.
Mastersmith Haley DesRosiers began by forging 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels into a four bar twisted Ws pattern damascus. The fine pattern grabs attention from a distance and holds onto it upon closer inspection. The raised clip is unsharpened and provides a secure thumb purchase when doing detail work. The blade melds into an integral bolster. Integral bolsters are something that is extremely hard to do in custom knives and Haley is a master of the technique.
Carved scales of African blackwood form the handle. A swell in the palm area and a flare at the end results in a comfortable and safe grip in hand. A stainless steel and black G-10 spacer provide excellent contrast and assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes.
Absolutely exceptional!
