Description: South African knifemaker André Thorburn creates an exceptional folder. The action on his folders is silky smooth -- easily opened with one hand using the ambidextrous flipper toggle. Andre's mechanism and action is among the best to be found anywhere. The blade uses the IKBS (Ikoma Korth Bearing System) pivot system. This mechanism, which was originally designed to fit balisong knives, uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play.

The handle scales of this exceptional folder were created by Garri Dadyan. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan, Garri was named a National Master Artist of the Soviet Union in 1985 for his unparalleled mastery of repousse metal work. In 1993 he became a member of the UNESCO International Federation of Artists in recognition of his superior artistry. A master metal worker, Mr. Dadyan employs the techniques of chasing, repousse, filigree and granulation, wax casting, engraving and niello with equal virtuosity. Working in solid sterling silver and 24kt gold with precious gems, Garri brings old world mastery to the new world that few can emulate.
The drop point blade is formed from N690 stainless steel, a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. It takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds on to it. Increased toughness gives it better resistance to edge chipping. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge. By satin finishing the grinds and mirror polishing the flats, Andre has emphasized his clean grind lines.
Jimping on the thumb ramp ensures a secure purchase. The flipper allows for a very smooth and fast blade deployment.
The meticulously carved scales are formed from .925 Sterling silver. Golden tones are brought in with 24k gold plate details and a bronze underlay. The three dimensional scales depict a jumping stag and intertwined swans. Faceted natural gems used throughout include:
1 - SI-2 to I1 round brilliant cut black diamond
19 - SI-2 to I-1 round brilliant cut 2.5mm H-1 diamonds (total weight 1.09 ct)
4 - SI-2 round brilliant cut 2.5mm yellow/brown diamonds (total weight .23ct)
2 - round cut 3.5mm GIA B 6/4 blue sapphires
2 - round cut 3mm GIA B 6/4 blue sapphires
1 - round cut 2.5mm GIA B 6/4 blue sapphires
3 - round cut 2mm GIA B 4/3 blue sapphires
2 - round cut 1.8mm GIA B 4/3 blue sapphires
2 - round cut 2.97mm GIA G 5/4 emeralds
1 - round cut 2.85mm GIA R 5/4 ruby
The sterling silver backbar is surrounded by fileworked and differentially anodized titanium liners. At the top of the backbar is Garri Dadyan's mark. The backbar culminates in a lion's head, crowned with the black diamond and holding the ruby in its mouth.
Exceptional fit and finish throughout -- combining the efforts of two exemplary masters! Easily one of the most impressive and dramatic pieces ever to be shown on BladeGallery.
