Description: Mastersmith Hank Knickmeyer is one of the first folks that introduced me to highly detailed mosaic damascus and I continue to be amazed by the level of intricacy in his designs. His skill at the forge has been an inspiration for many knifemakers and collectors. This hunter is an early knife by Hank -- likely from the early 90s. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. The early 90s were an exciting period for custom knifemaking. Artists such as Knickmeyer, Ed Schempp and Steve Schwarzer were experimenting and developing damascus patterns -- patterns that had never been seen before in many cases - in others, these pioneers of modern damascus were recreating historic patterns that were found in ancient knives. During this period, both Hank and Schwarzer experimented with sealing the steel with molten bronze. This is one of those knives.
The intricate blade combines three separate bars of steel. The spine bar is a bold twist pattern. The edge bar is a high layer count twist. The central mosaic bar combines small images along with Hank's HK mark. The twist pattern damascus edge will have excellent edge retention, due to the choice of carbon steels used in the damascus.
The handle is formed from a solid hippo tooth. The 'bolster' is formed from Sterling silver and fits nicely to both blade and bolster.
This is a rare, early example of Mastersmith Hank Knickmeyer's work. It shows Hank's tremendous skill at the forge.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
