Description: Herb Derr creates knives will an appearance that is captivating and immediately recognizable. The blade is a handsome bird's eye pattern damascus with a vine pattern fileworked spine. The steel has been deeply etched and heat colored for high contrast.
The handle combines Steller's sea cow rib bone with a buckeye burl spacer. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and very good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. The handle fits very comfortably in the hand and is quite beautiful. A nickel silver guard and butt cap bring weight back into the handle.
Accompanied by a pouch style leather sheath inlaid with cane toad leather.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
