Description: Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he has just completed a residence at the Appalachian Center for Crafts. Given the skill shown in this enticing utility knife, he is clearly on my list of makers to watch!
The dramatic damascus blade is a multi-bar composite. Three bars of twist pattern damascus are combined into a dramatic Turkish Twist. This is surrounded by an edge and spine Ws pattern damascus. The damascus shows both his skills at the grinder and at the forge. The steel clearly shows the influence of Mastersmith JD Smith, who is well known for his skills at creating damascus.
The burlwood handle has been stabilized and set on brass liners. Andrew forged mokume bolsters, combining copper with fine silver. The pattern in the mokume nicely complements the figured, swirling burl. Both the blade and full tang are distal tapered for a perfect balance.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath with caiman leather inlay.
Exceptional work throughout!
