Description: Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he has just completed a residence at the Appalachian Center for Crafts. Given the skill shown in this enticing fighter, he is clearly on my list of makers to watch!
The dramatic damascus blade is a multi-bar composite. W's pattern damascus is set into opposing twists to create a particularly complex and elegant Turkish Twist. The damascus shows both his skills at the grinder and at the forge. The steel clearly shows the influence of Mastersmith JD Smith, who is well known for his skills at creating damascus.
The handle is formed from a solid piece of striped ebony wood. It was carefully carved to resemble the wrapping on a katana. An oval blade guard (tsuba) and ferrule are formed from O1 carbon steel that has been textured and antiqued. Showing Meers' playful side (and fascination with insects), three ladybugs are inlaid in the tsuba and ferrule. The inlays combine copper, Shakudo (a traditional Japanese alloy combining 4% gold with 95% copper), fine silver, and gold (for the eyes).
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath with caiman leather inlay. Exceptional work throughout!
