Description: Mastersmith Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Andrew has a design sense that is beyond compare. Andrew won the Makers' Choice and Best of Show at the 2015 BladeGallery International Knife Show. This folder has been featured in an exhibition in Japan (North American Mokume-Gane Exhibit in Japan 2016) featuring American artists working in mokume. It is a master work. Included with the folder, is the full color exhibition catalog.
A unique knife at very first sight, the handle is made from textured steel. The pivot is created from textured and antiqued mild steel. The right scale features a female riflebird (Ptiloris victoriae) staring up at the moon. The bird is inlaid in sterling silver with 24k gold eyes. The silver is engraved with tremendous detail. The left scale features a male riflebird performing his mating dance. He is inlaid in sterling silver with mokume gane (forged from fine silver and copper) plumage. The riflebird erects the feathers of his throat and sides and curves his rounded wings above his body, tilting his head back to expose his chin and throat to dim rainforest light. The female riflebird is attracted to the male's display. The steel scales are set on 308 stainless steel liners, which in turn surround the fileworked backbar.
The blade shows off tremendous skill at the forge. Andrew combined 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels into a beautiful twisted, swirling damascus. The blade is easily opened using the right handed thumb stud. Andrew's mark is set on the left ricasso -- also in 24k gold.
This is an amazing work of art and tremendously inspiring! Words cannot do this knife justice. It is clear why Andrew Meers has quickly become among my favorite makers -- and is winning so many accolades!
