Description: Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans.
This is a new hand forged knife by Mastersmith Daniel Winkler. It is one of four knives that he has made in 2016.
The blade was forged from Daniel's own random pattern damascus and has an antiqued finish. Like many knives of the American frontier, the flats feature a rasp texture. Frequently, early American knives were re-purposed, worn out files and rasps turned into knives. Here, Daniel has forged a rasp texture into the steel. The spine is hand fileworked for a secure thumb grip.
Elk antler scales meet nicely with the damascus bolster and are set on a distal tapered tang. The handle is very comfortable and the natural texture provides a sure grip.
The knife is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style sheath is formed from rawhide and has leather thongs and a hand sewn seam traveling around the edge. Decorations include leather tassels decorated with trade beads, bone, tin cones, and horse hair. The top is decorated with porcupine quill work.
Exceptional work throughout!
