Description: This large folder shows Swedish knifemaker Tony Karlsson's work at its best.
The blade is formed from stainless damascus forged by Damasteel. The bold pattern is cleanly etched and shows off Tony's clean grind lines. The large blade is well centered with smooth action and is easily opened using the flipper tab.
The bolsters are formed from Gibeon meteorite. The Gibeon meteorite landed in Great Namaqualand, Namibia, Africa. It radio carbon dates to over 4 billion years ago. Gibeon fragments are spread over one of the largest strewn fields in the world, measuring 70 miles wide by 230 miles long and have a distinctive pattern known as the Widmanstatten pattern, which is one of the richest and most distinct patterns found in meteorites. The crystalline patterns can only form in the vacuum of space. The large metallic crystals require millions of years of cooling to form from a molten planetary core fragment. It has been estimated that it took about 1000 years for these molten pieces of planetary core to cool by just 1 degree Celsius!
The handle is formed from Picasso marble. This stone, which originates in Utah, is a relatively soft stone (between 4-5 on the Mohs scale). It is highly cherished by stone carvers for its striking and dramatic combination of brown, black, gray and white colors. Beautiful dark lines travel across a grey-green background. Screws are surrounded by meteorite inlays.
Copper spacers bring in warm tones and are set between the scales and anodized, textured titanium liners. The stainless damascus backbar continues patterns begun in the blade. The maker's mark, "T Karlsson" and "Prototype" are set on the interior of the backbar.
The knife is accompanied by a tulipwood presentation box. Tulipwood is an Australian rainforest tree. The wood has a dramatic figure that nicely complements the knife. The box top is held in place with magnets. The interior is wrapped with leather. Tony's mark is engraved into a Gibeon meteorite name plate. The knife is easily displayed on the top of the box, suspended using the metal wire and supported by a section of Picasso marble.
Exceptional work throughout!
