Description: Mastersmith Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Andrew has a design sense that is beyond compare. Andrew won the Makers' Choice and Best of Show at the 2015 BladeGallery International Knife Show. This folder won Best Folder at the 2016 Art of Steel Show. It has been featured in an exhibition in Japan (North American Mokume-Gane Exhibit in Japan 2016) featuring American artists working in mokume. Included with the folder, is a full color exhibition catalog showing this knife. It is a master work.
A unique knife at very first sight, the handle is made from textured steel. He changed the background texture after the exhibition since he felt the modified cat scratch texture added depth and detail. He is certainly right!. The pivot is created from Andrew's own mokume gane, forged from fine silver and copper. The right scale features a male king of saxony (Pteridophora alberti) inlaid in Sterling silver with 24k gold eyes. Characteristic head plumes are inlaid in mokume gane Meers forged from fine silver and copper. The left scale features a female king of saxony inlaid in sterling silver with 24k gold eyes. The steel scales are set on 308 stainless steel liners, which in turn surround the textured backbar.
The blade shows off tremendous skill at the forge. Andrew combined 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels into a beautiful, multi-bar damascus he calls Gordian Knot pattern. The blade is easily opened using the right handed thumb stud (created from forge welded cable). Andrew's mark is set on the left ricasso -- also in 24k gold.
This is an amazing work of art and tremendously inspiring! Words cannot do this knife justice. It is clear why Andrew Meers has quickly become among my favorite makers -- and is winning so many accolades!
