Description: Mastersmith Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Their name is well known in re-enactment circles throughout the world and movie buffs may recognize their work in films such as Last of the Mohicans. Their knives have an authenticity rarely found in other maker's work. Sadly, Daniel and Karen are now only rarely making their hand forged knives (so far, only two have been made in 2016). This one has been in a single private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Daniel and Karen could have made it yesterday.
This rustic, deep bellied camp knife has a dramatic sense of presence. The 1084 carbon steel blade was forged to shape and antique finished. Like many knives of the American frontier, the flats feature a rasp texture. Frequently, early American knives were re-purposed, worn out files and rasps turned into knives. Here, Daniel has given the 1084 carbon steel a rasp texture. The spine has been fileworked for a secure thumb purchase.
The handle is formed from elk antler and is secured to the distal tapered full tang with two carbon steel pins. The handle is extremely comfortable and makes for a knife you won't want to put down. A patterned copper ferrule brings warmth to the handle.
The knife is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style belt sheath is formed from vegetable tanned leather on the inside with a rawhide wrap. Deer hide thongs are decorated with glass trade beads, small vertebrae, tin cones and horse hair.
Exceptional work throughout!
