Description: Jonathan Loose's designs are immediately recognizable for their ancient Viking influences and his hand forged damascus patterns and finishes. He is a serious scholar of ancient antiquities and arts. As a child of parents who were both archeologists and academics, he developed an early and abiding love for ancient history, legend, and lore.
This knife has been in a private collection since it was made. It has been meticulously cared for and by all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
The Seax was essentially the bowie knife of the Viking Era. It was used for utility purposes as well as for fighting. This historically based Seax is based on several engravings in Du Chaillu's The Viking Age.
The blade is made from a 48 layer twist damascus forged from 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels for excellent edge holding. The spine was left thick, the way traditional seax were made.
The handle is made from ancient oosic that is nicely downturned for a comfortable grip. Oosic was used extensively as a handle material by the Vikings due to its incredible durability and its ability to remain slip resistant when wet. The handle is finished with a sterling silver band engraved with knotwork inspired by a Nordic runestone.
The knife is accompanied by a vegetable tanned leather sheath. The sheath is riveted with two rings designed to suspend the blade edge up when worn on the back in the traditional Scramaseax fashion. The rings are carved to represent the Midgard Serpent from Norse mythology who grew so large he surrounded the earth and bit his own tail.
Excellent work throughout!
