Description: South African knifemaker André Thorburn creates an exceptional folder. The blade of this compact folder is perfectly centered with silky smooth action -- easily opened with one hand using the discreet and ambidextrous flipper toggle. The blade uses the IKBS (Ikoma Korth Bearing System) pivot system. This mechanism, which was originally designed to fit balisong knives, uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play. Thorburn created this flipper with ceramic ball bearings. Generally IKBS bearings are made either from tool steel or from stainless steel. Stainless steel can wear away, resulting in uneven action over time. Tool steel bearings can oxidize making the action rough. Ceramic bearings are the best of all worlds -- extremely hard and wear resistant, they are also inert and will not oxidize.
The Vinland pattern stainless damascus was forged by Damasteel in Sweden. The flats are polished to nearly make the pattern disappear, whereas the grinds show off the high contrast patterns. Damasteel has exceptional edge holding and will have a super-keen edge. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge, with jimping on the thumb ramp to ensure a secure thumb purchase.
Like the blade, the handle is constructed for strength and durability. The scales are silver strike carbon fiber that are nicely domed to fill out the hand. This variation of lightning strike carbon fiber uses aluminum wire (rather than copper) woven through the carbon strands. Zirconium bolsters are hand engraved, textured, and differentially anodized, ensuring a beautiful, positive grip. Zirconium is a new material to the knifemaking world. It is a transitional metal that is primarily mined in South Africa and Australia.Zirconium is highly resistant to corrosion and scratching. A pierced titanium pocket clip is mounted for right-handed tip-up carry. The handle is completed with blue anodized, fileworked titanium liners and red fiber spacers.
Excellent fit and finish throughout!
