Description: This large camp knife is the sort of work that has made Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook household names in re-enactment circles throughout the world. Movie buffs may recognize their work in films such as Last of the Mohicans. Their knives have an authenticity rarely found in other maker's work. Sadly, Daniel and Karen are currently not making their hand forged knives. This one was made back in 2001-2003. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Daniel and Karen could have made it yesterday.
This Medicine Wheel Lost Camp Knife has a dramatic sense of presence. The flats are forge textured, whereas the grinds reveal the damascus pattern. Two separate bars of damascus were combined to form the complex pattern in the blade. The spine is nearly a 1/4" thick and features a distal taper for excellent balance. It is fileworked to provide a sure thumb purchase.
The handle is formed from ancient oosic. It is nicely downturned to fit comfortably in hand. A copper ferrule has been textured, antiqued and surrounded with sinew, providing a steadfast grip. The handle is finished with an antiqued and textured copper butt cap.
The knife is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The Native American style sheath is made from rawhide leather. A sewn seam travels around the edge. A porcupine quill medicine wheel is displayed on the front of the sheath. Thongs are decorated with antique trade beads, tin cones and horse hair.
Exceptional work throughout!
