Description: Mike Ball is a protégé of Jim Luman, renowned knifemaker and damascus maker. His designs are well thought out and feel excellent in the hand. This tanto shows excellent detail and Mike believes it is his masterpiece to date!
The blade is made from accordianed mosaic damascus and combines 304 stainless steel with L6 and 1084 carbon steels. The pattern is immediately captivating showing tremendous interest in the details when viewed close at hand and having bolder patterns that draw attention from a distance. The habaki (the blade collar, which protects the blade from scratches while in the sheath) is made from yellow brass and offers excellent contrast between the damascus tsuba (guard) and blade.
The handle is made from spalted maple with mammoth ivory spacers. The tsuba (sword guard) separates the blade from the handle and is formed from twist pattern damascus made from 15N20 and L6 carbon steels. The handle is finished with a Twist pattern damascus butt cap. This knife includes a saya (traditional Japanese sheath) made from Mediterranean pine and walnut. A mammoth ivory seat and spring lock latch onto the tsuba preventing the saya from sliding off.
Truly a piece that will be comfortable in any collection!
