Description: Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration comes from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans. Regretfully, Daniel and Karen are currently not making their hand forged knives. This one has been in a private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, Daniel and Karen could have made it yesterday.
The blade is carbon steel, forged to resemble an old file. In the colonial American frontier, knives frequently began their lives as files. In the American frontier, supplies were very limited, and nothing was squandered. When the teeth dulled, they could be ground into a new tool. The blade on this hunter is antiqued to lend to the rustic appearance.
Stag scales are set on the distal tapered full tang. Nickel silver spacers are set between the scales and the tang. A mild steel bolster and pommel complete the handle. The natural texture and shape of the stag is extremely comfortable. The tang has been nicely hand fileworked into a vine pattern.
The knife is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style sheath is formed from rawhide with antique glass trade beads, tin cones, horsehair, and leather fringe decoration.
An exceptional piece of work throughout!
