Description: Perhaps most desired of Master Smith Bill Burke's knives are his black sheep horn knives. Black sheep horn is extremely hard to find -- especially of this quality. The handle and spacer are predominantly black with white veins traveling across the surface. Adding to the rarity of this knife, Bill very rarely makes Bowies. Finally, the guard is formed from nickel silver, rather than brass. This makes a very nice contrast to the black horn handle. This Bowie has been in a private collection and was meticulously cared for. By all appearances it could have been made yesterday. It has never been used to cut.
Mastersmith Bill Burke's knives are as high performance as a knife can get -- the sort of knife that if you were stuck out in the woods or on a desert island and only had one tool, this would be it.
Burke's knives are pre-tested for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment is a highly detailed process that was developed between Mastersmith Ed Fowler and Bill Burke after years of trial and experimentation. This technique, involving low temperature forging, triple quenching and triple tempering creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. A differential heat treatment results in a blade with a soft, supportive spine and a keen, long lasting edge. Bill's mark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle combines black sheep horn with a nickel silver guard. The guard protects your fingers from moving onto the blade's edge and brings the weight to the center of the knife. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. A spacer is created by taking two black sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect. The knife is accompanied by a sturdy, 14 oz. waxed leather pouch style sheath. An extremely comfortable handle. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
