Description: Master Smith Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he has been a part-time knifemaker and hopes to go full time. Given his tremendous sense of design and skill of implementation, it seems impossible that he would not succeed! Andrew Meers won the Makers' Choice and Best of Show at the 2015 BladeGallery International Knife Show.
The high contrast ladder pattern damascus blade was forged to shape from 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels. Both the blade and tang are distal tapered, ensuring a perfect balance. The tang is meticulously hand fileworked. The fileworked thumb rest gives a particularly nice grip.
Jet black African blackwood scales are dovetailed with textured, antiqued mild steel bolsters. The left bolster features a highly detailed mouse lemur. The right bolster displays a tree branch -- the mouse lemur's habitat. Both images were formed from sterling silver utilizing chasing and repoussé. Repoussé is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief. Chasing is the opposite technique to repoussé, and the two are used in conjunction to create a finished piece. Details are completed in 24kt gold. After creating the lemur and his tree branch, they were inlaid into the antiqued, mild steel bolsters.
This is an amazing work of art and tremendously inspiring! Words cannot do this knife justice.
