Description: Mastersmith Adam DesRosiers, alongside with his wife Haley, live off the grid in very remote rural Alaska. With no water or power available for 8 miles, aside from the sky, creek, or gas generator, these two truly live off of the land and create handmade knives meant for serious use or collection!
Prior to finishing out the blade, Adam put this one through a tremendous chopping test which he documented. Based on the video, Adam had a lot of fun! While clearly a tremendously artful knife, it is also designed for hard use. Even the handles were chosen for their strength. As Adam noted, it is no surprise that Inuit traditionally used walrus ivory for all sorts of tools, from harpoon tips, to fire starters and sled runners.
The blade is simply striking! Adam forged the blade on this large integral bowie from 1095 and 15N20 carbon steels. The Turkish twist pattern is stunning and is one of the most difficult patterns to properly produce. It requires combining many bars of carefully twisted damascus -- each with a perfectly matched degree of twist. Adam has clearly mastered the challenge. The clip point blade is just over a foot long and has a lengthy false edge (swedge), and is distal tapered for perfect balance. The blade melds into an integral bolster, and is followed by fileworked of grooves. Integral bolsters are something that are extremely hard to do in custom knives and Adam is a master of this technique as well.
Sculpted scales of pristine ancient walrus ivory form the handle. A swell in the palm area and a flare at the end results in a comfortable and safe grip in hand.
This is a sizable yet well balanced, classy knife, truly intended for hard use. It is sure to be a tremendous use knife or collector. Absolutely exceptional!
