Description: Artist Tom Sterling combines sculpture and function into unique masterpieces that are rarely matched elsewhere. Each creation is an original museum quality work, evocative of times long past. Long fascination with many artistic and historic disciplines have led to artistic interpretations of the tools and weapons of bygone times, resulting in a fascinating fusion of cultures. Nordic, Celtic, Aztec, Mayan and Northwest Native American influences are often noticeable. This dagger is named for the Lascaux Caves, which are the setting of a complex of caves in southwestern France famous for its Paleolithic cave paintings.
The blade and full tang of this little dagger were forged to shape from 1075 carbon steel. It is completed with Tom's 'knapped steel' technique, so as to resemble a flint knapped knife. This technique is only possible from Sterling's careful examination of flint knapped knives over the many years of his using traditional flint knapping technique to create stone knives.
Titanium scales are set on the full tang with hand domed copper rivets. The scales are engraved with a European cave painting motif and inlaid with 24kt gold details. The engraving is done in the Japanese "shishiaibori" technique, consisting of extremely deep outlines and bas relief carved inside. This results in a long-wearing engraving where all details are below the surface.
The dagger is accompanied by an American black walnut display stand.
