Description: Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he is now the artist in residence at Appalachian Center for Crafts. Given the skill shown in this majestic dagger, he is clearly a maker to watch!
The long, slender damascus blade is a four bar composite forged to shape from 1095 and L6 carbon steels. The resulting pattern is high contrast and exceptional. It shows both his skills at the grinder and his skills at the forge. The steel clearly shows the influence of Mastersmith JD Smith, who is well known for his skills at creating damascus.
A large quillion ring guard and pommel are forged from mild steel and heat blued. The top of the ring is inlaid with 24k gold. The kingwood handle is surrounded by satin finished sterling silver ferrule. Twisted sterling silver wire is inlaid into the tops of each flute. The fluting, combined with the striated figure in the wood, is particularly enticing.
This is among my favorite daggers to ever be on BladeGallery. It is an amazing work of art and tremendously inspiring! Words (and photos) cannot do this knife justice!
