Description: This is an exceptional S-Guard Bowie from Journeyman Smith Chuck Richards.
The 7-3/4 inch long clip point blade was hand forged to shape from his own feather pattern damascus, beginning with 1095 and 15N20 carbon steels. A central shaft radiates feathered quills. The S-guard and spacer are both forged to shape from his damascus as well.
The handle is particularly dramatic and was formed from an artifact. In the 1700s and 1800s, the Inuit people used walrus ivory for a wide range of tools -- from fish hooks, to sled runners, and fire starters. This artifact was most likely a tool handle. Chuck allowed the work from ancient hands to remain on the ivory, smoothing the front section for a secure and comfortable grip.
Excellent work throughout!
