Description: Mastersmith Rick Dunkerley consistently creates knives that have perfect execution. Every so often, however, there is one that shines above and beyond the rest. This is one of those. It is no surprise that it won Best of Show at the 2014 American Bladesmith Society Forged Knife Exposition in San Antonio, TX.
The blade features a pictorial mosaic damascus formed from three separate composite bars of mosaic damascus. The intricate damascus pattern is a series of crosses moving down the middle of the blade. Creating such a complex pattern with such symmetry shows Rick's true skill at the forge. The dagger shaped blade is not sharpened on the back side (so that it doesn't cut you when closed!), and is perfectly centered with silky-smooth action.
Both bolsters are formed from the matching mosaic damascus. The handle scales are premium ancient walrus ivory, with rich, beautiful coloration. The ivory offers an array of colors from burnt cream, caramel, tan, and blues. These colors are acquired over thousands of years from the minerals of the soil that the ivory is sitting in, and each and every piece is unique and can be dramatically different. These scales have been shaped, carved, and textured in a cross design to continue the patterns begun in the steel. The recesses are textured while the raised portions are polished, offering a subtle and attractive contrast. Centered in the crosses on both sides are gold oval escutcheon, ideal for engraving. The full length backbar has intricate hand filework and running wheat pattern engraving inside and out. 15N20 carbon steel liners were stippled and then nitre blued.
All work has been done by Rick. This is a truly gorgeous and classy piece. Exceptional work throughout.
