Description: Daniel Winkler and Karen Shook work together to create knives that have a timeless beauty that will quickly become family heirlooms. Their name is well known in re-enactment circles throughout the world and movie buffs may recognize their work in films such as Last of the Mohicans. Their knives have an authenticity rarely found in other maker's work.
This piece has been in a private collection since it was made in 1999. It is in new condition and has never been used to cut. Daniel describes it as one of the most complicated Bowie knives that he has ever created. The handle alone puts it among Daniel's most dramatic knives. When combined with the detailed Turkish Twist damascus, it can easily be considered among his master works to date. He has told me that he does not expect to make another one like this.
The damascus blade is a composite twist patterned called a Turkish Twist. Creating this pattern is extremely complicated, and requires forging many bars of twist pattern damascus, setting them in alternating directions and reforging them into a solid bar. The spine was meticulously fileworked.
The handle is formed from presentation grade ancient walrus ivory. The blue/green tones in this ivory are particularly rare and well matched. Four sections of the ancient ivory are surrounded by bars of twist pattern damascus. The guard is forged into twisted mild steel finials.
The knife is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style sheath is formed from rawhide, weathered with traditional stitching. Decorations include leather tassels, twisted mild steel beads, and trade beads.
Daniel's skill in creating knives that appear to have weathered time is clearly evident in this magnificent piece! It is truly a masterpiece!
