Description: Mastersmith Ed Fowler's knives are the hallmark of a perfected high performance knife. Ed's heat treatment creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. This 6-1/2 inch camp knife has been in a private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. Camp knives are a rare find from Ed these days and this is an exceptional example of his work.
The blade was forged at low temperature from 52100 carbon steel. This is a high carbon, high chrome steel in a very pure form and results in a knife steel that is as good as it gets. It was subjected to a minimum of 30 low temp thermal cycles, which requires a lot of hammer work. The blade was carefully hardened three times using a differential hardening technique developed by Ed in conjunction with Mastersmith Bill Burke for this steel. Triple tempered to push the steel to the limit, these blades are easy to sharpen, yet hold an edge better than any I have tested. A differential heat treatment line is clearly visible in the steel.
The large sheep horn handle fits comfortably into the hand. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. The spacer is created by taking two sheep horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect. The brass guard features Ed's signature willow bow engraving. Excellent fit and finish throughout.
