Description: Daniel Winkler became a full time bladesmith in 1988. His inspiration continues to come from frontier America - a time when the equipment a person carried meant sustenance and survival. He strives to be innovative, while maintaining a recognizable style. His goal is to make tools of uncompromising quality that will last a lifetime and survive as heirlooms for future generations. Mastersmith Daniel Winkler had the honor of producing knives and axes for use by principal actors in the epic motion picture Last of the Mohicans.
This large Cowboy Bowie was made between 2000 and 2005. The long blade, which measures nearly 10 inches, was hand forged to shape from carbon steels. The top section of the blade features the hammer blows from the forge. A short, swooping swedge sits atop the blade. The guard was forged from antiqued mild steel and has two upturned, flattened disc finials.
The handle is hand picked crown stag secured with three pins. A copper ferrule and baseplate add to the rustic, frontier quality of the piece, and are secured with copper pins.
The knife is comfortable and well balanced. It is dramatic, both visually as well as in the hand. This piece is accompanied by a sheath by Karen Shook. The frontier style sheath is formed from rawhide, and weathered with traditional stitching and fringe. It is decorated with tin cones, copper beads, glass trade beads and horsehair. The throat is formed from antiqued copper.
