Description: Saign Charlestein is an artist who has worked in the film and entertainment industry making armor, knives and swords since 2002. Saign uses timeless metalsmithing skills to produce the finest quality armor in a variety of different metals including aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, steel, and silver. He uses age old techniques such as raising, planishing, chasing and repousse, and engraving. Saign has designed items for The Chronicles of Riddick, True Blood, Star Wars, Everquest, and Heroes among many other well known movies, TV shows, and video games.
This piece is called "Phrygian Helmet". In antiquity, Phrygia was a kingdom in the west central part of Anatolia, in what is now modern-day Turkey. According to Homer's Iliad, the Phrygians were close allies of the Trojans and participants in the Trojan War. King Midas was one famous Phrygian king. This recreation of one of their helmets is based on a 4th century BC helmet and is made from hand-raised copper. Saign created this from a single sheet of copper!
The top of the helmet raises to a distinguished comb which is drawn up into a forward curl knop. The side cheek plates are embossed using chasing and repousse techniques to simulate a beard with coiled locks in high relief.
Saign patented this piece in many multiple steps, a process that took literally months on end. The result is a uniform green patina that copper acquires over the normal passage of time.
The helmet comes with a black wooden display stand. A unique and amazing piece! The helm measures approximately 15 inches in height and 8-1/2 inches across.
