Description: Swedish bladesmith Roger Bergh forges one-of-a-kind, sole authorship creations that have a timeless beauty and high attention to detail. Stjarna, or star in Swedish, does not fall short of Roger's reputation.
The mosaic damascus blade is a multi-bar composite. The edge and spine have been forged into a firecracker pattern from 20C and 15N20 carbon steels -- a combination that is visually striking while having excellent edge holding ability. The surrounding bars as well as the central damascus include pure nickel for a very high contrast, dramatic effect. Depicted in the steel are pure nickel stars of various sizes. The blade features a hollow grind for ease of sharpening and a swedge that runs approximately 3/4 the length of the spine.
Roger is particularly well known for his handle-work, where he uses rare and exotic materials. The main section of the handle is formed from mammoth ivory bark, with a damascus frame running along the spine and belly. The bark ivory combines blue-green and caramel tones with black rivulets running throughout. The natural texture of the artifact mammoth ivory heel has been polished, but left otherwise unfinished for a natural, raw feeling and is a wonderful juxtaposition with the exquisite fit and finish of this knife. The spacer was created from mammoth molar -- showing off spectacular veins of blue and black against the cream and caramel. The underside of the molar spacer has a piece of oak recovered from a 300 year old ship wreck. A stainless steel guard joins the blade and the handle and is hammer textured on the front face. Black fiber spacers assist the natural handle materials adjust to changes in temperature and humidity. The knife is accompanied by a traditional tooled leather sheath -- Swedish sheaths are often just as beautifully crafted as the knives they hold. Excellent fit and finish throughout. This is the kind of work that made Roger Bergh world renowned!
