Description: This is Ed Fowler's very first damascus knife. Ever. He made it in 1981, and at the time thought it was the greatest knife he could possibly make. He gave it to his father, who carried and used it for skinning, carving wood, and the like. The blade is now shorter than it was originally, and is presently in the same condition as Ed got it back after his father passed away.
The knife is accompanied by a letter from Mastersmith Ed Fowler to the collector that purchased it from him. Among other things, the letter, which is hand signed by Ed provides provenance that it was Ed's first damascus knife, was a gift to Ed's father, and was made in 1981. This is a rare opportunity to procure a piece of knife history.
The drop point blade was forged to shape from Ed's own carbon steel, beginning with O1 and mild steel. He started with 5 layers and folded it to about 200 layers. The blade has a nice distal taper. The right ricasso bares Ed's mark. The brass bolsters were engraved by Ed with seven branch willow bow.
The sheep horn handle fits comfortably into the hand. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. The spacer is created by taking two horn end cuts and aligning them outward, producing a very pleasing effect.
The knife is accompanied by a leather pouch style sheath.
This knife obviously shows the wear created from many years of loving use, though it is in amazingly good condition despite this. It is a rare and exceptional find for any collection.
