Description: Bladesmith Aaron Wilburn was awarded the Mastersmith rating by the American Bladesmith Society in June of 2013. This knife is one of the five knives created by Aaron for the Mastersmith test, and as such clearly demonstrates his exquisite attention to detail. These five knives are judged by ABS Mastersmiths on fit and finish as well as general artistry, and the standards are exacting. Many people feel that these pieces are among the most collectible knives of a maker's career. When makers create knives for their Mastersmith test, they frequently spend many extra hours ensuring the knife is perfect in every way. There is no question this one is a master work.
Wilburn: Mastersmith Test SetThis bowie has been in a single private collection since it was made by Wilburn. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. It has never been used to cut and by all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
This large bowie knife was forged to shape using Aaron's own Wolf Tooth pattern damascus. By alternating 372 layers of 15N20 and 52100 carbon steels, Aaron created a complex and visually stunning damascus that captures the imagination. The unique pattern was created by forging a random pattern damascus, adding in a half ladder and forging the blade to shape. A differential heat treatment is clearly visible in the steel and ensures a keen, long lasting edge with a soft, supportive spine. The drop point blade was then finished with an appleseed grind -- a technique that ensures a very strong edge that will hold up under heavy use.
The S guard was forged from antique wrought iron. The bronze spacer is heat colored to show off a soft patina that echoes warm tones in the ironwood handle. The handle is ergonomically sculpted to fit perfectly in the hand - slight swelling in the middle fills the palm and then swells again toward the pommel. Straight grained Arizona desert ironwood is well known for its warm chocolate and sienna tones.
The tapered blade provides perfect balance and is remarkably nimble for its size. Its easy heft makes this knife a joy to hold. Truly an exquisite piece to have in any collection! The knife is accompanied by a custom hand made 8 oz. lined leather sheath.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath by Wilburn.
Exemplary fit and finish throughout!
