Description: If you are looking for "wow factor", you need not look any further! Journeyman Smith Bruce Bingenheimer continues to make exceedingly stunning knives. Given the quality of his work, it is no surprise that he has won numerous awards including Best Damascus at the 2012 MKA show.
This knife is simply stunning. The blade was forged to shape from W2 carbon steel which was then quenched in water using a traditional Japanese technique - a technique that is extremely difficult to master but produces a superior quality edge. By coating the spine with clay during the heat treatment process, the spine cools at a slower rate thereby keeping the spine soft while creating a hard and durable edge. This process reveals what is known as a hamon line -- a visible separation between the softer spine and keen, long lasting cutting edge.
The blade meets a modified S guard which is forged and sculpted from Bruce's own W's pattern damascus and borders a filed fuller of matching material. The damascus combines bold and fine patterns resulting in exquisitely beautiful fittings. It is one of those patterns that keeps revealing more details upon closer examination.
The handle boasts a solid piece of pristine ancient walrus ivory that incorporates toasted almond and burnt cream tones. The ivory is "proud fit" to a G10 spacer which helps the handle in adjusting to changes in temperature and humidity. The handle is extremely attractive as well as functional, with a natural ergonomic flow. A pommel and end screw made of the same damascus rounds out the knife.
This knife is accompanied by a hand stitched and tooled brown leather sheath lined with deer hide. Gorgeous work throughout!
