Description: Mastersmith Wally Hayes creates dramatic knives that combine tactical and Japanese elements. This exceptional example of his work has been in a private collection. It has been meticulously cared for and is in new condition. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
The spine, which measures just over 1/4 inch thick steel lends serious heft to this piece! The blade is forged to shape from Wally's own san mai carbon steel damascus. An O1 carbon steel core ensures a keen, long lasting edge, while the softer damascus forged from O1 and mild steel helps cushion and protect the core steel.
The handle is wrapped in traditional Japanese style. White ray skin is surrounded by black cord wrap. A Turk's head knot forms a 'bolster'. Two sterling silver Hayes menuki create a very comfortable palm swell.
This is quite an impressive piece, combining tactical and traditional appearance and a nice mixture of form and function.
