Description: Koji Hara began making hunting knives in the style of Bob Loveless for the G. Sakai company in 1988, where he worked for 7 years. After leaving G. Sakai in 1995, he proceeded to make custom folders in entirely his own style.
Higonokami are the classic folding pocket knives native to Japan. This traditional knife is a friction folder, using the friction of the swivel and the pressure of the user's hand on a protruding tang to prevent the knife from folding during use. It is a simple, yet ingenious mechanism.
The elegant blade is stainless damascus surrounding a VG-10 stainless steel core. This steel ensures exceptional edge holding. Cutouts in the blade artistically enhance the lines of the blade. When closed, the exposed portions of the top of the blade are textured, which is attractive visually as well as helps provide an easier grip when opening. The blade has smooth action and is well centered.
Koji meticulously carved the shibuichi handle into a bamboo shape matching the blade. Showing tremendous realism, Koji even carved 'splits' into the "bamboo", mimicking the behavior of the natural wood. Shibuichi means "one-fourth" in Japanese and indicates the standard formulation of one part silver to four parts copper. Until Japan's Meiji reforms (late 19th century), when swordsmiths began to make purely decorative objects instead of swords, shibuichi was used to ornament various fittings for katana. The pivot combines textured bronze and stainless steel. The frame surrounds a mirror polished 420 backbar, also carved into the shape of bamboo. The knife is accompanied by a presentation box.
Truly an exceptional folder!
