Description: Artist Tom Sterling combines sculpture and function into unique masterpieces that are rarely matched elsewhere. Each creation is an original museum quality work, evocative of times long past. Long fascination with many artistic and historic disciplines have led to artistic interpretations of the tools and weapons of bygone times, resulting in a fascinating fusion of cultures. Nordic, Celtic, Aztec, Mayan and Northwest Native American influences are often noticeable, but whimsy occasionally lets fly as well.
Here Tom has created a pair of Celtic/Viking inspired hairsticks. The body of each stick is made from 1095 carbon steel, forged, filed, hardened, and tempered, with a dark antique patina. The tops of each stick are set with a titanium "face' that is engraved with intricate Celtic/Viking designs. Each engraving displays a different knot work animal. One offers a heron clutching a ball of Celtic knot work, with its tail also ending in a flourish of knot work. The second engraving shows a Viking dragon, replete with fine scales and knot work. Each titanium face is secured with four pins of silver -- one of which forms the dragon's eye, complete with a pupil. Below each engraving is a subtle raised area, offering Tom's maker's mark.
A gorgeous set, and a unique opportunity.
