Description: Tommy Alatalo is an incredible knifemaker from Luleå, Sweden. Born in 1988, his interest in knifemaking began when he was only 20. Tommy has had the opportunity to work closely with Mattias Styrefors and Jonny Walker Nillsson and a strong influence of both masters clearly shows. I was introduced to him by Jonny and I tend to pay attention when a master of Jonny Walker Nilsson's reputation says he is impressed with someone's work.
The drop point damascus blade is a collaboration between Tommy and Mattias Styrefors. It is one of the first blades to be stamped with Tommy's own logo. The blade combines an explosion pattern damascus for the spine and edge with a pictorial damascus in the center. Light and dark suns are literally forged into the diamond checkered steel. An etched finish reveals subtle organic striations, which give the knife a unique old world appearance. By forging together 20C and 15N20 carbon steels, a damascus pattern is created with striking contrast that is immediately eye catching and ensures optimal edge holding.
Tommy is developing a reputation for creating visually striking knives. His handles are truly an amalgamation of stunning materials. Stabilized poplar in tones of raw umber comprises the base of the handle -- the wood grain radiates out like a rising sun. Alternating spacers of reindeer antler and stabilized and dyed birch burl are a backdrop for a cut out of scorpion pictorial damascus. The antler spacer has been meticulously engraved in a traditional Sami knot work motif. The intricate patterns are not scrimshaw, but are hand engravings darkened with pine bark powder using traditional Sami techniques. Natural grain structure in the antler echoes the striations of the steel. Warm tones in the woods are complementary throughout. The front bolster is formed from mammoth ivory, of which the consummate V grain pattern is exceptionally beautiful. Hand carved filework graces the spine of the blade.
Subtle sculpting in the handle conforms comfortably in the hand.
This knife is accompanied by a custom fit rawhide leather sheath with traditional tooling and a damascus belt loop button. Excellent fit and finish. Keep an eye out for more fine work from this up and coming maker!
