Description: Mastersmith Ed Fowler's name has become synonymous with the height of performance. Since his earliest work, he strove to make the perfect working tool -- and many feel that he has succeeded.
This rare find is a dream for Ed's collectors. This is one of seven Prairie Bowies Ed made in the 1990's. Ed considers his Prairie Bowie to be a tribute to the true pioneers, those who had to fight and make a stand for the values that they believed in. This early bowie is in new condition and by all appearances could have been made yesterday.
The blade was forged from 5160 steel and pre-dates Ed's move to 52100. The knife has a convex grind and was made before Ed started using the Price grind. The left ricasso features Ed's maker's mark, with the top aligned with the bolster. The blade was forged at low temperature and was subjected to a minimum of 30 low temp thermal cycles, which requires a lot of hammer-work. It was carefully hardened three times using a differential hardening technique developed by Ed. Triple tempered to push the steel to the limit, these blades are easy to sharpen, yet hold an exceptional edge. The blade features the unique Wootz-like grain pattern that has become a hallmark of Ed's style.
The handle is made from Arizona desert ironwood and mule deer antler crown with a brass guard. The guard is engraved with Ed's willow bow mark and features seven branches. Ed chose his handle materials to represent the spirit of the prairie ecology. As Ed notes, the Sterling silver spacers represent "the riches that are here for those who can open their hearts and see." The silver, which surrounds the desert ironwood, adds a beautiful contrast. Black and red fiber spacers assist the handle to adjust to changes in temperature and humidity.
The knife is accompanied by its original leather sheath. Excellent fit and finish throughout on a very rare and exciting find for collectors of knives by Mastersmith Ed Fowler.
