Description: Swedish knifemaker Roger Bergh created the knife which many of us now think of as the Swedish Hunter. This exquisite example of his work has been in a single private collection since it was made by Roger back in 2001. It has never been used to cut and has not been sharpened since Roger made it. By all appearances, Roger could have made it yesterday.
Roger began by forging the dramatic damascus blade. Four separate bars of twist pattern damascus were set in opposing directions and combined to create the complex blade. By hollow grinding the blade, Roger revealed the hidden star patterns in the damascus. Combining 20C and 15N20 carbon steels ensures excellent edge holding.
Roger's work on his handles has always set him apart -- his ability to find rare and exciting materials continues to draw my attention. Here, reindeer antler -- a hallmark of Swedish hunters -- is combined with presentation grade mammoth ivory and warm toned koa. The ivory is set sideways, revealing the dramatic crossed grain pattern. The front of the bolster and rear of the carved pommel reveals the deep green mammoth ivory bark. Green ivory is among the most desired and rarest finds. A central koa wood section brings warm tones to the hunter that are repeated in the hand tooled traditional Swedish leather sheath.
