Description: Growing up in a house where everybody had creative hobbies, John has always enjoyed making things with his hands. A part time knifemaker and retired architect, John Arnold finds both joy and satisfaction in designing and constructing well balanced, well proportioned and beautiful knives. The Knifemakers Guild of South Africa recognized John's skill and accepted him as a member in September 2006.
This Mammoth Ivory Folder with Folding Gut Hook was made by John in the spring of 2012. It has been in a knifemaker's private collection and has been meticulously cared for. It has never been used or carried and is in new condition. John made very few folders with the folding gut hook and they were wonderful!
This elegant folder features a locking, folding gut hook that is truly unique! It is a strong, reliable folder for everyday carry, yet it could easily be a cherished knife in any collection. The blade is formed from high performance 12C27 stainless steel. It is wickedly sharp, incorporating a fascinating grind - John has sculpted the swedge in such a way that when viewed point-first, the modified tanto tip forms an elongated diamond shape. The action is silky smooth, and the blade is perfectly centered without the slightest wobble.
The sliding back strap is formed from N690 stainless steel and conceals an elegant gut hook. A modified liner lock mechanism locks the gut hook in place. This is a design that John has been developing for some time and the results are exceptional!
The handle scales are formed from presentation grade mammoth ivory. Fiber spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes. The angular, sculpted scales are set on anodized titanium liners, jewel polished on the interior. Ambidextrous thumb studs complete the piece.
303 stainless steel bolsters are satin finished and meticulously hand engraved by Belgium-born artist Julien Marchal. Julien studied engraving and gun making at Léon Mignon Liège in Belgium.
Excellent work throughout!
