Description: Fred Ott's work is exceptional -- showing off his tremendous sense of design and skill in implementation.
The twisted W's pattern damascus blade was hand forged from 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels for a long lasting edge. The pattern is immediately captivating -- it grabs attention from a distance and holds it upon closer examination. A distal taper creates an optimal balance. The handle combines rich, warm toned desert ironwood with a contrasting Steller's sea cow bone spacer and guard. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. The contoured handle assures a firm, comfortable grip. An exceptional addition to any collection and perfect for use out in the field!
