Description: I was introduced to Laszlo Balatoni's work by Anders Hogstrom. When Anders said this maker's work was exceptional and his attention to detail nearly unmatched, I listened! Laszlo, who lives in Uppsala, Sweden, has been making knives for over 20 years. Though he initially started making knives due to his interest in fishing and outdoor life, he quickly began to enjoy the competition aspect of knifemaking that is prevalent in Sweden. His work is incredible.
The multi-bar composite Damascus blade was forged by award winning Swedish bladesmith Henry Hilden. The blade combines highly complex patterns with a firecracker pattern edge. The edge is forged from CK 100 and 15N20 carbon steels for exceptional edge retention. By incorporating CK 100 and 15N20 carbon steels along with pure nickel and iron into the spine bars, Henry ensured exceptional contrast. The blade shows tremendous control and skill.
The handle is meticulously executed and shows both an artistic eye for design and skilled implementation. The main section of the handle is formed from stabilized redwood burl. Sections of mammoth ivory and buffalo horn are separated by spacers formed from nickel silver and brass. The combinations of materials in the stacked handle immediately grabs attention!
This large bowie is accompanied by a hand tooled leather sheath -- also formed by Laszlo Balatoni. Exceptional work throughout!
